The Environment,
Our lamb and mutton graze pastures in planned rotations that provide the pasture plants and soil, the disturbance, nutrients, and rest/recovery needed to build additional soil, enhance bio-diversity, harvest solar energy, and demonstrate a more sustainable food model. From our coastal ranches with a variety of native grasses, to our inland valley ranches with planted and irrigated pastures, our livestock feed, converting stored solar energy within pasture plants into delicious and nutritious meat.
The Diet
Our lamb and mutton select their diet from the pasture plants they ingest. In addition to pasture plants, our lamb and mutton are supplemented free choice minerals, stored hay and/or other allowed stored feeds when the pasture nutrient density is to low to support adequate finishing growth.
Our Lambs and Ewes
Our lambs are raised alongside their mother ewes suckling milk, maturing, and learning to graze pasture plants. At five to 6 months of age they are weaned from their mothers and provided lush pasture for finishing. Our mutton is derived from our mother ewes who have reached the end of their productive life. These ewes are provided lush pasture for finishing and brought to market as premium mutton. The following breeds have frequented our pastures: White Face – Suffolk – Dorset – Dorper – Cheviot – Scottish Black Face – Navajo-Churro
Our Lamb and Mutton
Our lamb and mutton are very mild, tender, and delicious meats. We produce fresh lamb year round and we only produce fresh mutton in the spring, summer, and fall months. During the winter months we supply mutton harvested at the peak of the season from our freezer.

Supply Chain
MSF lamb and mutton are raised on farms within the Bay Area Food-Shed. Lamb and mutton are slaughtered at Superior Farms USDA facility in Dixon. The carcasses are transported to the F. Uri Meat Company USDA facility in San Francisco and butchered by MSF staff butchers for wholesale sales. Primal cuts destine for retail sale are then transported to the MSF retail butcher shops in Point Reyes Station or Oakland, for further fabrication, cutting and packaging.
It is the connection and transparency from production to plate that is most critical in upholding the highest level of integrity. If you have any questions or would like clarification on anything, please contact us.
