Position:  Oakland Butcher Shop General Manager

Reports To:  Co-Executives

Base Location:  MSF Oakland Butcher Shop, Oakland





This position will manage the MSF Oakland Butcher Shop and work in tandem with the MSF Petaluma HQ on administrative and product supply needs. The goal of this position is to ensure MSF Oakland continued stability, success, and growth. The person who fills this position will be expected to excel in supervisory management, operational organization and efficiency, shop and customer experience, written and oral communication, and reporting to upper management.



  • Drive top-line sales
  • Ensure operations are organized, effective, and efficient
  • Supervisory management of staff: hiring & firing, training, team and individual work flow, labor schedules, payroll finalization, disciplinary actions and performance improvement
  • Ensure that the highest quality Customer Experience possible is provided by all staff (including but not limited to: positive and friendly customer service, high quality butchering, custom ordering, advanced ordering, staff appearance and dress code, etc)
  • Ensure orderly, beautiful, and clean presentation of all meat/food products and non-food merchandise
  • Support company Safety Program, OSHA, and other regulatory or internal requirements, such as equipment training, safety training and monitoring
  • Maintain Quality Assurance and HACCP in accordance with company standards and good manufacturing practices; coordinate with MSF Petaluma QA Compliance Manager
  • Implement and monitor corrective actions as needed
  • Manage technical data including scale/labeling/POS system information, product formulations and recipes, company information
  • Handle all correspondence with MSF upper management and Petaluma facility managers
  • Build successful working relationships with key managers and staff
  • Be prepared for dynamic job responsibilities, as we are a small and growing company



  • Qualified candidates will have a thorough knowledge of retail butcher shop functions:
    • Meat processing, storage, display, costing/pricing, waste minimization, whole carcass fabrication and utilization
    • Compliance with government regulatory requirements and quality control management
    • Supervisory management
    • Customer experience and service
    • POS, scales, registers, and money management
    • Facility and equipment maintenance
  • Management Experience: 3+ years
  • HACCP Certified
  • Food Safe Certified
  • Excellent managerial and organizational skills
  • Self-motivated and able to self-manage
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others across multiple platforms
  • Able to efficiently and effectively handle shifting and multiple priorities
  • Strong skill and competency with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel)
  • Willingness to continue to learn new skills required to be successful
  • Punctual and reliable
  • Team player with a positive attitude
  • Keen attention to detail and record keeping
  • Available to work all hours as needed
